"Chance and necessity," the famous title of the book by Nobel laureate Jacques Monod encapsulates the fate of genetic variants: they unpredictably spread or disappear in the vagaries of mendelian segregation, or they predictably spread in populations when conferring increased survivorship and fecundity to the individuals that carry them.
